Dozens and dozens of community children spanning all grade levels lined up Thursday, Aug. 20 along the sidewalk in front of Anaconda Disposal Services at 110 E. Pennsylvania Ave. to collect school backpacks, books and school supplies for the upcoming school year as part of the business’s annual “Our Little Red Schoolhouse” school supply drive.
After gathering their supplies, children were able to get a balloon animal or a face painting by Tashia Gates. The school supply drive started at 9 a.m., and by 11, 150 children had come through.
“Our Little Red Schoolhouse” was started by co-owner of Anaconda Disposal Jeanne Krumm and her husband a little more than a decade ago. What started as Krumm’s pet project grew into serving hundreds of community children. Anaconda’s AWARE and Gables resort also held school supply drives, on August 21 and August 25, respectively.
