Lao Tzu really did get it right

‘Beyond the Beat’ By James S. Rosien Anaconda Review Publisher Several years ago, I wrote a column for the Leader about leadership, specifically the concept of it expressed by the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu in the following excerpt from the Tao Te Ching:  “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, not so good when people obey and acclaim him, worst when they despise him. Fail to honor people, they fail to honor you. But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aims fulfilled, they will all say, ‘We did this…

Lady Copperheads rattle off four straight wins – three of them sweeps

After hitting a little bit of a rough patch following their Homecoming sweep of Powell County on Sept. 17 with losses to Thompson Falls and Florence on the 19th and 22nd, the Lady Copperheads are back in a big way as winners of their last four matches.  Anaconda’s winning streak began with a 3-0 sweep of Loyola-Sacred Heart in Missoula on Sept. 24, which was followed by another 3-0 sweeping road win on Oct. 1 at Arlee, and again two days later did the same to Darby with a 3-0 sweep at home on Oct. 3. And the Lady Copperheads…

‘Heads fall to Huntley Project, 52-6

Halloween may not be for a few more weeks, but Friday night was devils’ night at Mitchell Stadium as the visiting Red Devils brought the fire and brimstone with them from Huntley Project in the form of a 52-6 scorcher.  Future Copperhead cheerleaders join their high school counterparts for the halftime show at Friday night’s game as the culmination of their cheerleading camp. Photo by Evann Johnson. And yet things weren’t so off balance to begin with, as both teams punted on their first possessions – with the ‘Heads getting a first down on theirs, as quarterback Gillie Everett found…

Cross Country sets more personal bests at Three Forks

The Copperheads just keep getting better and better as most of the Anaconda Junior/Senior High School and Fred Moodry Intermediate School cross-country teams set personal-best marks at the Headwaters Invitational on Friday, Oct. 2 at Headwaters Public Golf Course in Three Forks.  Gage Novak led the way once again for the ‘Heads, setting a personal-best time of 17:37.0 to take 15th place. Several fellow AHS boys’ varsity runners set personal-bests at Headwaters as well: Brett Dahood, who finished 52nd with his time of 19:43.0; Austin Schellenberg, who was right behind in 54th with his time of 19:50.0; Avery Wayland, who…

The five ‘Ws’ of the Review

‘Beyond the Beat’ By James S. Rosien Anaconda Review Publisher W ow, what a long, strange four-ish months it’s been.  Much has been written and discussed ever since I was given the order to lock the doors on the Anaconda Leader and put the “Permanently Closed” sign out front on that fateful Monday morning of June 8, 2026 – though comparatively very little of it has been by yours truly. That whole experience has taught me a great deal – about business and finance in general and publishing in particular, but one of the greatest lessons it taught me is…

Road warriors return: AHS thumps Eureka, 34-8

Anderson has five-TD game as win takes some sting out of 28-24 Homecoming loss The Copperheads had a historic run on the gridiron in 2025, defeating Loyola for the first time en route to their first postseason game in 10 years, and this year they’re picking up right where they left off, with another historic win and another trip to the playoffs – with the possibility of a home playoff game still in the cards.  Anaconda stands at 2-1 in conference (2-3 overall), good for second place behind only Thompson Falls, to whom they narrowly fell, 28-24, on Homecoming night…

AHS bumps past Powell County at Homecoming

The Lady Copperhead volleyball team had a happy Homecoming on Thursday, Sept. 17 with a 3-0 sweep of Deer Lodge’s Powell County High School, but don’t let that goose egg fool you as it was a thrilling contest every bump, set and spike of the way as the individual scores for each set were 25-23, 25-19 and 26-24 – all in Anaconda’s favor. After a see-saw battle to begin the first set, Anaconda jumped out to a 9-6 lead as senior Logan McKay dealt three aces in a row to Deer Lodge, who then answered back with a 6-0 run…

Road warriors return: Copperheads crush Loyola in Missoula, 38-6

Copperhead Road isn’t just a song, it’s a way of life for the gridiron gang known as Copperhead Football. Last year the ‘Heads went undefeated on the road in the regular season, and this year’s iteration of the Road Warriors is back after handing Loyola a 32-point loss in Missoula on Friday, their 38-6 shellacking serving as an encore to their first-ever win over the Rams at last year’s Homecoming game. And this time those Road Warriors took to the air, with quarterback Ryder Anderson achieving a feat not seen by the ‘Heads since Dylan Smith in 2018 and Braxton…

The Lady Copperheads kept it close against the Falcons in the first couple sets on Tuesday, with Twin Bridges eking out the win in the first, 25-23, and holding on for a 25-19 victory in the second before closing out the third set,…
